Citynet Cable/Internet Enterprise Sold to Comcast |
In
our meeting on Tuesday, January 28, the council voted unanimously to
sell San Bruno CityNet, formerly known as San Bruno Cable, to Comcast
for a maximum purchase price of $8 million. As I shared in my last
newsletter, this outcome was inevitable given that the enterprise lost
over $21 million over the past decade due to skyrocketing costs of
programming, and it simply doesn’t make financial nor practical sense
any longer to run our own cable/internet enterprise. Here are further details regarding the sale agreement: |
- The purchase price of $8 million could be reduced if total customers drop below 5,400 prior to the closing.
- Comcast
will withhold 10% of the purchase price for one year from the date of
closing to secure the City’s indemnity obligations.
- Following
the closing, the Agreement provides for a transition period of up to
six months. During the transition period, the City must continue to
operate CityNet while Comcast performs upgrades and physically
transitions customers, area by area, to Comcast’s service platform.
- The
City must transmit all customer revenues to Comcast, less a management
fee retained by the City in the amount of $75 per customer per month to
cover the City’s costs of operating and maintaining the system during
the transition period.
- The
sale does NOT include any real estate assets, the CityNet vehicle
fleet, nor CityNet employees. Nor will any CityNet vendor or other
contracts be assigned to Comcast, with a few exceptions.
- CityNet
employees will be governed by the existing memoranda of understanding.
We have been working for months to secure positions in other City
departments for affected CityNet employees.
- Responding
to our questions during the meeting, Comcast representatives stated
that their intention is to hold current rates for at least one year
after the transition; and that in most if not all cases customers will
see an increase in internet speed after the transition.
|
Council
also voted to amend certain sections of our municipal code to reflect
the dissolution of CityNet. I will continue to share details on this
important change for our community as they become available. |
