Catastrophic Fires in Los Angeles County
My
heart goes out to our neighbors in Southern California and everyone
impacted by the devastating fires in Los Angeles County. So many have
lost everything, dozens have been killed by this heart-wrenching
tragedy, and I’m incredibly grateful for the first responders working
to stop the fires. I joined my California colleagues in asking
President Biden for a major disaster declaration, and am grateful for
his quick action on behalf of our state. I will be working to help
ensure federal assistance is delivered to the affected communities.
Residents who’ve been impacted are encouraged to apply for FEMA
assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov.
New Committee Assignment
I am excited to announce that just last week, I was appointed to serve on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
This influential committee has the broadest jurisdiction of any
standing committee in Congress. It impacts a variety of industries like
healthcare, climate and environmental protections, energy,
telecommunications, technology, consumer protection, as well as
interstate and foreign commerce.
Common Ground
I
am always eager to work with anyone genuinely interested in solving
problems for everyday families and making progress on the issues that
matter the most to people at home here in the Bay Area. A few of my top
priorities are to address the high cost of living while creating an
economy that works for all, addressing the impacts of climate change,
preserving access to health care, and protecting democracy.
Addressing
these issues will require bipartisan compromise, especially as
Republicans only have a narrow majority in the House of
Representatives. While I am always willing to work across the aisle, my
House Democratic colleagues and I are also committed to pushing back
against threats of extremism that threaten our values.
As
we enter into a new administration and the 119th Congress, let us
remember that as Americans, we have much more in common with our
neighbors than what sets us apart.
